Kashmiri Walnut Wood Carving: A Legacy in Every Grain
Kashmir is not only a land of breathtaking beauty but also home to one of the world’s most exquisite art forms — walnut wood carving. With its origins dating back to the 15th century, this intricate craft has been passed down through generations, each artisan adding their own depth and detail to the story.
Grown only in select regions of the Kashmir Valley, walnut wood (Akhrot) is prized for its strength, fine texture, and rich brown hue — making it ideal for detailed carving. The wood is harvested from trees that can be centuries old, naturally seasoned, and then carefully transformed by Naqqash (master carvers) into pieces of timeless beauty.
From grand furniture and ornate wall panels to delicate trays, boxes, and decor items — every carved product reflects the soul of Kashmir, often showcasing motifs like lotus flowers, chinar leaves, paisleys, birds, and Mughal-inspired designs.
